The original textile manufacturing company, Universal Knitters & Weavers (Pty) Ltd was established by Peter E Hompes in 1964 as a fully vertically integrated textile knitting factory in Newtown, Johannesburg.   

In 1981 Anglo Vaal acquired a majority stake and shortly thereafter the factory was expanded and relocated to a building in Lea Glen. Plant and Machinery were installed to expand production of curtaining and upholstery fabrics. The factory employed circa 200 people operating 3 shifts and was highly profitable. The Universal business was incorporated into the Anglo Vaal Group, held within their Textile division as Avtex which comprised of:  

• S A Fine  

• Puma  

• Mooi River Textiles  

• Gelvenor Textiles  

• Universal / Loomcraft 

Around the beginning of the 1990s, the business embraced the advent of Textile Imports from all corners of the world and the business procured additional plant and machinery for converting and finishing of textiles and relocated to Roodepoort. Loomcraft supplements its local procurement and manufacturing division with textile imports from various international suppliers from across the world.  

Loomcraft is now one of SA's leading textile distributors, led by a young and dynamic management team and headed by Neil H Hompes, with over 70 years of combined experience in the industry. While Loomcraft acts primarily as a wholesale and distribution business to the retail and clothing manufacturing industries, Loomcraft also functions as an importer, converter, printer, coater and finisher of selected fabrics. ​
